Hoot Grid — Privacy Policy
Effective date: July 3, 2026
Applies to: the Hoot Grid mobile game (“Hoot Grid” or the “App”), published by Taman Labs LLC (“we”, “us”, or “our”).
This policy explains what information Hoot Grid collects, why we use it, who processes it, and the choices you have. Version 1.0 contains no advertising and never asks for your name or email. Numbered levels require no sign-in. Daily Challenge uses an anonymous Firebase identity to run ranked attempts and leaderboards.
This policy covers the Hoot Grid app. For the Taman Labs company website, see the Taman Labs privacy policy.
1. Summary
- No named account. You can play without a username, password, email, social login, or public profile. Daily Challenge uses an anonymous Firebase identifier for ranked play.
- Pseudonymous gameplay analytics. We collect a limited set of events about how the game is used. Events are associated with a random installation identifier, not a name, email, account, or advertising identifier.
- No advertising or tracking. Version 1.0 has no advertising SDK, rewarded ads, advertising-identifier access, or cross-app advertising tracking.
- No purchases. Version 1.0 does not offer in-app purchases.
- Progress stays on your device. Your local level progress, active puzzle state, assist balances, and settings are stored on-device.
- Daily ranked play. Daily Challenge uses Firebase to create anonymous ranked sessions, validate submitted attempts, and show leaderboard rows under generated owl aliases.
2. Information We Collect
2.1 Gameplay and usage analytics
We use PostHog to collect a small, fixed set of product-analytics events. Examples include the app being opened; a tutorial or puzzle being started or completed; the puzzle ID and content version, level, board size, and difficulty; bucketed completion results; a hint or strategy lesson being used; and a setting being changed.
Event details use ranges and categories where practical. For example, a completion time is recorded as a range instead of an exact duration. We do not send your puzzle-board contents, full move history, advertising identifier, payment receipts, or free-text to analytics.
PostHog also receives limited device and technical information, including device model, operating-system version, app version and build, language or region setting, and a random identifier created for the app installation. We do not use that identifier to identify you personally. Location enrichment, session recording, and automatic screen or tap capture are disabled.
2.2 Information stored only on your device
Your numbered-level progress, active puzzle state, assist balances, and settings are saved locally. This information is not uploaded to us and is removed if you delete the App. Hoot Grid does not currently sync progress between devices.
2.3 Daily Challenge
Daily Challenge uses Firebase Authentication, Cloud Functions, and Cloud Firestore to run one shared ranked puzzle per UTC day. When you open or play Daily Challenge, Firebase may create or use an anonymous user identifier. This identifier is not your name, email address, username, or social login.
For ranked Daily attempts, we collect the Daily date, puzzle identifier and checksum, anonymous Firebase UID, ranked session ID, start and completion timestamps, remaining lives, mistake count, submitted move log, failed owl attempts, validation result, rank metadata, and a generated owl alias used for leaderboard display. We use this data to validate the attempt, prevent duplicate ranked submissions, calculate ranking, show your Daily result, and protect leaderboard integrity.
Daily leaderboard rows display generated owl aliases, rank, remaining lives, elapsed time, and flawless status. Players cannot enter a public name, email, or free-text profile for the leaderboard.
2.4 Purchases and advertising
Version 1.0 does not offer purchases, initialize RevenueCat, show display or rewarded ads, contain an advertising SDK, or access your device advertising identifier. A future version may add advertising or purchases; we will update this policy and the store disclosures before introducing any such feature.
2.5 What we do not collect
We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, contacts, photos, precise or background location, microphone or camera data, health data, browsing history in other apps or websites, or payment-card details.
3. How We Use Information
We use the information described above to:
- run the game and save progress and settings on your device;
- understand which puzzles and features are used and where players get stuck;
- improve the tutorial, puzzle difficulty, and product experience;
- diagnose technical problems and unexpected app states; and
- protect the App against abuse and comply with legal obligations.
We do not use this information to make automated decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you.
4. How Information Is Shared
We do not sell gameplay analytics or share puzzle activity with advertisers. Information is processed only as described here:
| Recipient | Role | What it processes |
|---|---|---|
| PostHog | Analytics processor acting on our behalf | Pseudonymous usage events, device data, and installation identifier |
| Firebase / Google Cloud | App functionality processor acting on our behalf | Anonymous Daily UID, ranked Daily sessions, submitted attempts, validation data, results, leaderboard rows, and abuse signals |
| Apple App Store | App distribution | Platform-level data governed by Apple's policies |
We may also disclose information if required by law, to enforce our terms, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of users or the public.
5. Where Data Is Processed
PostHog stores our analytics data in the United States. Our current Firebase / Google Cloud configuration processes Daily Challenge data on Google infrastructure in the United States or North America. If you are elsewhere, your information may be transferred to and processed in those regions under appropriate safeguards where required. Apple may process platform-level data under its own policies.
6. How Long We Keep Data
- On-device data remains until you reset it or uninstall the App.
- Analytics data is retained for 12 months and then automatically deleted.
- Daily Challenge data including sessions, results, submissions, and abuse signals is retained for 30 days after the Daily date, then purged. Moderation audit records may be retained longer to protect leaderboard integrity and investigate abuse.
7. Your Choices and Rights
- Stop future collection: uninstalling the App stops analytics collection and removes local app data.
- Daily Challenge: if you do not want ranked Daily data collected, do not start a Daily ranked attempt. Numbered levels remain playable without Daily Challenge.
- Access or deletion: you may ask us to access or delete data associated with your use of the App. Because analytics are pseudonymous, we may need information that helps locate the relevant installation record.
- Daily deletion requests: because Daily Challenge does not use a named account, we may ask for details such as the Daily date, generated owl alias, rank, app version, and approximate completion time to locate the relevant anonymous record.
Contact us using Section 12 to exercise applicable privacy rights. Some security, legal, backup, or moderation records may be retained for a limited period where permitted by law.
8. Advertising, Tracking, and App Tracking Transparency
Hoot Grid version 1.0 has no advertising SDK, does not access the device advertising identifier, and does not track activity across other companies' apps or websites. It therefore does not present Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt.
9. Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect information, including encrypted transmission between the App and our providers. No transmission or storage method is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
10. Children's Privacy
Hoot Grid is a general-audience puzzle game and is not directed to children under 13, or the equivalent minimum age in their country. The App does not ask players for a name, email address, phone number, public profile, chat message, photo, or other free-text personal information. Version 1.0 contains no advertising. The random analytics identifier is used only to support internal operations such as understanding and improving app functionality, not for advertising, profiling, or cross-app tracking.
If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us using Section 12 and we will review and delete it where required.
11. Region-Specific Information
11.1 European Economic Area, United Kingdom, and Switzerland
Our legal basis for pseudonymous first-party analytics is our legitimate interest in understanding and improving the App. Our legal basis for Daily Challenge data is to provide the ranked Daily feature you request, and our legitimate interest in protecting leaderboard integrity and preventing abuse. Subject to applicable law, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to processing and to lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority.
11.2 California and other U.S. states
We do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. Subject to applicable law, you may request access to or deletion of personal information we hold, and we will not discriminate against you for exercising those rights.
